Hot as Hell!
I jumped up from bed, eager to start my day. Putting on my work clothes and doing up my hair, I opened the front door, anticipating a lovely cool morning, when everyone else who didn't have to clean up trash was still asleep--when the world is dark and misty and all mine. Instead of a cool breeze and birds chirping, I was slammed in the face by a wave of heat--the kind of heat that should never last till 4:30 AM! I checked the weather on my phone. 89 degrees, with a forecast of 115 for the afternoon. Flaming shitballs! I grew up in Bakersfield and took hot summer weather as a matter of course, but this was ridiculous.
We are dealing with the hottest heat wave I ever remember in my 30 years living here. Spiders are curling up in their webs; flies are sizzling and falling out of the sky; Sahara desert lizards are fleeing and screaming for mercy. The pavement on the streets is pooling into lava. Swimming pools are boiling over.
I opened my front door yesterday afternoon to latch the security screen. It felt like reaching into my oven to check if the cookies are done.
Thank the good Lord for air conditioning! I feel so bad for homeless people and animals who have to sleep outside. I feel bad for my husband who has to work out in this heat! Thankfully he has the genetic makeup of an armadillo and doesn't seem to mind it too much. Stay hydrated, people! We are 70% water, and this heat is dangerous. A local lawyer already died on a 5K run the other night, because the idiots in charge of the run didn't cancel it in spite of the heat--and he was kind of foolish to run it as well. I feel so bad for his family!
We shall survive! Peace out.
